How Bridge Fees Are Calculated

Bridge fees consist of three components: a protocol fee (usually 0.04–0.5% of transfer amount), source-chain gas to initiate the transaction, and an optional relayer fee for fast settlement. The fee model differs by bridge design.

Flat-Fee Bridges

Orbiter Finance charges a fixed relayer fee per route (e.g., $0.50 Arbitrum→Base), regardless of amount. This makes them very efficient for large transfers but less attractive for tiny amounts.

Percentage-Fee Bridges

Stargate charges 0.06% base fee on every transfer. For a $10,000 transfer that's $6 in protocol fees alone, plus gas. Percentage models scale with your transfer size — beneficial for small amounts.

Hybrid Bridges

Across Protocol uses a dynamic fee model based on LP utilization and route demand. During high utilization, fees rise; during low utilization, they can drop below 0.05%. Synapse uses a fixed percentage plus gas rebate on some routes.

Bridge Security Ratings Explained

Security ratings reflect the protocol's architecture, audit history, incident record, and total value secured. A higher rating means the bridge has more defensive layers — not that it's immune to exploits. All bridge usage carries smart contract risk.

★★★★★
Battle-tested (3+ years, $1B+ TVL, no major exploits)
★★★★☆
Established (audited, 1–3 years, minor incidents only)
★★★☆☆
Moderate (audited, newer or had recoverable incident)

The largest bridge hacks in history: Ronin ($625M, 2022), Wormhole ($320M, 2022), Nomad ($190M, 2022). Never bridge more than you can afford to lose to a new or unaudited protocol.
